Alien: Covenant (2017), the second film in the Aliens (1979) prequel series, has a more chilling sequence in the final few minutes than the rest of the story. There is a shocking twist right at the end.
Daniels (Katherine Waterston) unintentionally realizes a truth but it is too late to act now because she is about to get into a good night's sleep. We can't say for how long, maybe forever. We can't be sure until a sequel to the film arrives.
Alien: Covenant has Michael Fassbender in a double duty, which explains the twist in the end. When the film has dealt with the first-ever Praetomorph Chestburster, it is time that the protagonists get some rest via cryosleep. But then Walter is revealed to be David, and he holds some evil plans while thinking of himself as a god.
How did Daniels recognize David at the end of Alien: Covenant?
Michael Fassbender is in a dual role in Alien: Covenant. He is Walter as well as David. The former is the latest model of synthetic androids, while the latter has been a part of the franchise since Prometheus (2012). Just like Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter franchise, these two androids can't be differentiated easily except for their attitudes. That said, David is the more sinister one.
Daniels sees danger when she realizes it is the sinister one who is putting her to cryosleep, and some evil might follow. In the scene, we can see David (disguised as Walter) sending Tennessee (Danny McBride) to sleep and then approaching Daniels.
Everything is going fine, and it almost looks like a happy ending. Walter arranges for Daniels to get into the sleep pod and activates it. They also have a soothing conversation before the pod is closed. She asks him how it will be at Origae-6, the planet they are headed towards after a tiring day in space. 'Walter' replies that it will be kind if they will be kind to it.
In the next frame, he activates the pod so Daniels can sleep. But - hey - she forgot to ask him one thing. She wakes up inside the locked pod and gives a knock and asks if Walter will help build that cabin on the lake. 'Walter' replies: "what cabin, girl?"
She looks at his expressions and surmises he is David, and cries over her fate. In that Alien: Covenant moment, David gives her a sinister smile and says,
"Don't let the bed bugs bite."
The bed bugs won't, but the nightmares sure will.
What is David's ultimate plan in Alien: Covenant?
During a scene where David plays a flute while looking at a photograph of Elizabeth, whom he loves, Walter enters the room and deduces the truth about the supernova burst that we see in the beginning of Alien: Covenant. That was a part of David's plan, who thinks that humans are a dying species and need replacement by something superior.
