Blue Moon, written and directed by Richard Linklater, stars Ethan Hawke as the cherished Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart as he tries to gulp down his sorrow one drink at a time. Margaret Qualley plays Elizabeth Weiland, a woman he meets in a bar and falls head over heels for.

The film's official plot synopsis reads,

“On the evening of March 31, 1943, legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart confronts his shattered self-confidence in Sardi’s bar as his former collaborator Richard Rodgers celebrates the opening night of his ground-breaking hit musical “Oklahoma!””

Sony Pictures Classics has just released an official trailer for this project, which offers a glimpse into Hart's bittersweet world. Apart from Hawke and Qualley, the film also stars Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott.

The trailer sets the stage for what seems to be a chamber drama, which plays out almost entirely inside a bar. It opens with a clip of Lorenz Hart attending Richard Rodgers' musical, which becomes a hit.

Lorenz seems visibly displeased by its success. So, he retreats to a quaint bar as Richard receives the flowers for his applauded work. Still, he doesn't seem like just another disgruntled, grumpy man who's simply upset over a single incident. His sadness seems deep-seated. It feels like the situation only brought out a side of him that may be conventionally unlikable.

Still, the trailer promises an experience that's a far cry from the sappy dramas about aging men sharing their grievances. Instead, Richard Linklater turns his protagonist into an imperfect but charming fixture. His vision feels like the smart, snappy, dialogue-driven mid-budget dramas that once were far more openly received.

Berlinale describes Linklater's new film as,

"It is a meditation on friendship, art, and love, featuring a rich tapestry of writers, actors, musicians, friends, and protégés – a parade of the famous and the soon-to-be-famous."

More details about Richard Linklater's Blue Moon

Richard Linklater has seemingly decided to turn the clock back with his latest two projects, Blue Moon and Nouvelle Vague.

Both are biographical dramas about legends from yesteryears who have left an indelible mark with their work. The latter film is part biography and part recreation of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, which was one of the pioneering works from the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave). It premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Blue Moon, on the other hand, is part biography and part musical, about one of the most memorable artists from Broadway's history. Linklater's film follows a part of Lorenz Hart's life where he contends with his struggles with alcoholism and mental health. The film premiered at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival, where Andrew Scott received the Silver Berlin Bear award for his striking performance as Richard Rodgers.

The musical biopic marks Linklater's ninth collaboration with Ethan Hawke. They have worked together on a string of outstanding films such as Boyhood (2014), the Before trilogy, Tape (2001), and more.

Blue Moon is scheduled to arrive in theaters across the US on October 24, 2025, after an initial release in New York and Los Angeles on October 17.
