Whatever she has had to say, Jennifer Lawrence always does, especially to her close and longtime friend, Emma Stone. In a recent Vogue cover story on Emma Stone, the X-Men actress revealed that she was disappointed when she realized she would be shaving her head for her newest part in Yorgos Lanthimos' dark comedy, Bugonia.

Talking to Vogue about it, Jennifer Lawrence said:

“I really didn’t want her to shave her head. I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut.”

As she referenced to Stone's cropped look for Battle of the Sexes (2017), which is based on a true match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King in 1973, in which Emma Stone played the iconic tennis champion opposite Steve Carell, who played the role of Bobby Riggs.

Why did Emma Stone shave her head for Bugonia?

Emma Stone plays the role of a high-powered pharmaceutical CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists, portrayed by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, who think that she is an alien who is bent on destroying Earth.

The movie is a remake of the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet! This is the fourth time that Emma Stone will be collaborating with director Lanthimos, who worked with her on movies like The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kind of Kindness.

Stone and Lanthimos have produced banger after banger, after one short and four feature movies together and an Academy Award later, the duo are back with Bugonia, which has been creating a lot of buzz with elements of dark comedy, sci-fi paranoia, and emotional depth. The film has got it all. Maybe stands a chance to bag another award for Stone.

In one of the film's scenes, the kidnappers shave her head in real time. It was not faked on screen; the haircut that Emma Stone received is very much real. Talking about this moment to People, Jesse Plemons said:

‘Here we go—Emily has shaved her head. We better make this good!"

While Stone was excited by the change, she also admitted it brought her down to her knees as it reminded her of her mother. It was right before shaving off her hair. The moment reminded her of her mother, who was diagnosed and battled Breast Cancer in 2008 and had lost all her hair while undergoing chemotherapy.

Stone told Vogue, as she remembered the moment:

"She actually did something brave. I'm just shaving my head."

Stone went on to add that her mom was jealous of her new hairstyle, as she got to wear hats and wigs, and she had to keep it a secret. She told Vogue:

"My mom was like, ‘I’m so jealous. I want to shave my head again.’ "

Jennifer Lawrence's mind changed once she saw Emma Stone in action. Later, she claimed that Emma did not indeed pull it off. Jennifer Lawrence said:

"Honestly, she looked beautiful. She pulled it off."

Jennifer Lawrence saw the haircut as more than simply a style but as a reminder of Stone's courage and fearlessness as an actor, to go to lengths for it. The two have supported each other throughout their careers, through the highs and lows.

Jennifer Lawrence was on stage with Michelle Yeoh, who had won it the previous year to give the Oscar's Best Actress Award, and it so happened that her friend Emma Stone won for her performance in Poor Things, which was released in 2023.

Jennifer Lawrence spoke about the moment and said:

"In true Emily form, as soon as we got offstage and ran into the bathroom to scream and cry. I whispered, 'Two-time best-actress winner,' and she replied, 'I feel like that’s bad, though.' "

Stone on taking career risks

Stone chose to shave her head not only to fulfil the job, but also to challenge herself:

“The more challenging it gets, the more I like it. If you’re not growing or pushing yourself to different places—and I feel it’s the same for most people in almost any job you get stagnant.”

Speaking about the new benefits of her new haircut, she said:

“No better feeling in the world. The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.”

Stone is set to be seen in Bugonia, which makes its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival before reaching cinemas on October 24th through Focus Features.
