The Breakfast Club is a film in the comedy, drama, and coming-of-age genres.

Written and directed by John Hughes, it was released by Universal Pictures on February 15, 1985. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,

"Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal. The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently – and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same."

Nearly 40 years since it first came out, the film is now getting a theatrical re-release.

The Breakfast Club to re-release in theaters

The Breakfast Club has completed 40 years of its theatrical release, and to celebrate this occasion, the makers are re-releasing it. Universal Pictures will be releasing the film in theaters across the United States on September 7th and 10th. A new poster has also been released.

Jim Orr, who oversees the domestic theatrical distribution arm of Universal Pictures, said on the re-release:

"The Breakfast Club is one of the great films about identity, alienation and connection. The film’s honesty, humor, and humanity continue to connect with audiences of all ages. We’re honored to bring it back to theaters so that a new generation can experience its power on the big screen.”

In April 2025, all five leading actors of the film had gathered at Chicago's C2E2 convention. This was the first time they were together since its release. Molly Ringwald told the crowd of people:

“I feel really very emotional and moved to have us all together. We don’t have to use the cardboard cutout anymore because he’s here. I feel really moved that we’re all together.”

The Breakfast Club was produced by John Hughes and Ned Tanen. It focused on five high school students who have to spend a Saturday together as they serve detention. The cast members include Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, John Kapelos, and Judd Nelson, among others.

Upon its release, the film received positive reviews and grossed $51.5 million at the box office. It was also included in the Congress Library's United States National Film Registry.
