After years lost in the fog of rumors and Hollywood drama, Johnny Depp might just be ready to hoist the black flag once more in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga. But brace yourself, because this return isn’t going to be a simple “back on the ship” moment. Producer legend Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Depp’s iconic pirate could only set sail again if the script feels right.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the producer says,
“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
It does instill hope among fans who have waited for Depp's return to the franchise for quite a long time. Bruckheimer further praises the actor and what he did for the franchise, and adds,
"It's a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it. I love him. He's a good friend. He's an amazing artist, and he's a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow."
Johnny Depp's role as Jack Sparrow
When Johnny Depp caught wind that Disney wanted to turn the Pirates of the Caribbean theme park ride into a movie, he was instantly hooked by the chance to breathe life into an old Hollywood genre with a fresh, quirky twist. The story was about returning it to break a curse, and the usual mutiny drama was already a done deal. Depp was cast in June 2002, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer knew this unconventional choice would inject an edge that could reel in not just kids, but teens and adults craving something fresh from Disney’s usual fare.
In a foreword for a reference book for the franchise, Bruckheimer writes,
"And it was quite a sight to see Johnny, fully attired as the now legendary Captain Jack Sparrow, emerge on that beach, as excited as the rest of us to set sail on another Pirates of the Caribbean epic."
Johnny Depp's prep for Captain Jack Sparrow was as eccentric as the character himself. He locked himself in a sauna, cranking the heat to a blistering 1,000 degrees, convinced Jack was forged in the relentless heat of the open seas.
Bruckheimer later adds,
"Johnny ultimately imbued Captain Jack with such humor, humanity, derring-do, and occasional signs of bravery—even selflessness—that an icon was born. Johnny and his alter ego, Captain Jack, took their place among the pantheon of movie immortals."
To date, Jack Sparrow remains one of Johnny Depp's most notable roles, and to watch him bring it back to life will be a moment of pure magic and nostalgia.
