Chance the Rapper, during an August 14 appearance on the New Rory & Mal Podcast, opened up about the challenging parts of his divorce with Kirsten Corley. In the podcast he mentioned,
"You might feel like you're over it and you're not over it. Or you might be used to a certain pattern of operating, and because it don't work like that, you have to allow yourself grace to deal with that and operate in reality."
Chance and Corley first met when they were just 9 years old and tied the knot in 2019. The share daughters are Kensli, 9, and Marli, 5. Corley filed for divorce against the rapper in December 2024, eight months after the two announced their separation "amicably" in a joint statement.
In the joint statement, the two stated,
"After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways. We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together."
Chance the Rapper revealed that his separation from Corley has been a "transition" as they're still "growing."
"The reality of it is everybody deals with their family different. The family I come from is very, very close. It's very important for us and for her and her family for us to be tight. So we still travel together, we('re) still family forever. It's just a different format of it."
"I ain't gonna act like it's not tough," says Chance the Rapper on his divorce
While opening up about how challenging the time after separating from Kirsten Corley was, Chance the Rapper said,
"I ain't gonna act like it's not tough. I ain't gonna act like it's perfect and we shook hands and dipped. It's weird. I think the toughness is that it's a reality. I think that's the toughest part."
The rapper said that it is a difficult thing to get over since they were used to a different reality before. He reiterated the importance of taking the time to see how it will function going forward. Chance the Rapper also highlighted that it's important for the former couple to be cordial with each other since they still live near each other in Chicago and cross paths often. He added that he sees Corley "at least every other week."
While talking about co-parenting their two children, the rapper said that their children will keep them connected for the rest of their lives, adding that he's in a "Venn diagram." While he admitted that they are not the most "emotionally mature people," they both have "that vantage point" that allows them to not let things "go too far in any direction."
