Nolan characterized the movie as, "A contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” With Leonardo DiCaprio at the center of an extensive cast, the movie was a critical and financial triumph when it was released.

Globally, the movie brought in about $836 million. It received Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Nolan received many accolades, including nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director and a BAFTA Award.

Nolan received nominations for eight Academy Awards, two of which he won; eight British Academy Film Awards, two of which he won; and six Golden Globes, one of which he won. Nolan was made an Honorary Fellow of UCL in 2006 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in literature in 2017. He was on Forbes' Celebrity 100 list from 2011 to 2014, which was determined by his popularity and revenue.


He was given a hand-and-footprint ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles in 2012, making him the youngest filmmaker to earn this distinction. In 2015, Time named Nolan one of the world's 100 most influential people. In the 2019 New Year's Honours, he was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to filmmaking.


He received the Public Service Award from the Federation of American Scientists in 2023 for his portrayal of scientists in the movie Oppenheimer. The Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma awarded Nolan the Honorary César award in 2024 for "continually pushing the boundaries of storytelling," and the British Film Institute Fellowship for his "extraordinary achievements and enormous contribution to cinema." For his cinema services, Nolan was named a knight bachelor in March 2024, while his wife, Emma Thomas, received a damehood.
