General Hospital’s John J. York has played the beloved Mac Scorpio for decades. Mac has been referred to recently, but we haven’t seen him in any major storylines for a while. In 2022, York was diagnosed with two forms of cancer, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and smoldering multiple myeloma, and the doctors told him he might only have a few years left to live without treatment. He then embarked on an intense medical journey, including seven days of aggressive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. While fans hope for Mac to soon be on the front burner once again, York recently opened up about how he never faced his health crisis alone.

His grandchildren brought him joy

General Hospital star John J. York recently appeared on the Reppin podcast and credited his wife, daughter, and extended family, both at home and on the show, for keeping his spirits strong. “My wife Vicki has been my nurse, my rock, and my best friend through all of this,” he stated. Their daughter Skylar and her husband ensured York received treatment at Vanderbilt University, one of the nation’s top cancer centers.

Sadly, there were times during his health crisis when he couldn’t even hold his grandchildren. However, the actor remarked that simply seeing them brought him joy. “My youngest grandson, Joshua, was born, so we didn't even get to see him or hold him for three months, and that was awful,” he remarked, adding, “We got to see him through the window.” He also explained how his wife was his rock, noting, “Vicki was my nurse and she took care of me. I couldn't have done anything without her. She's just the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me.”

Faith got him through it

York not only praised his family, but his General Hospital family as well, who checked in on him often, with, “Kristina Wagner [Felicia], John Lindstrom [Kevin] calling me all the time.” He also noted that executive producer Frank Valentini also called and texted him, “checking in to see how I'm doing.” He would often ask the EP when he could return to work, but at the time, the reality was that he was mired in his cancer treatment.

“It's one day at a time and it's really just a deep faith in God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit working in me, working in my family, working around me,” he confidently stated. He then noted that, “Everybody has a different experience with cancer.” For those who are currently dealing with the disease, the General Hospital star advised, “You're here right now with your family, your loved ones, and whoever you're with, and hold their hand and share your time with them and smile and be happy and be joyful because we're here and we're here together.”

He then reminded folks that there will eventually come a time when people are gone from this Earth, and, “You don't want to have a regret of, ‘Gosh, I wasted that time’. You want to really, truly enjoy every moment.”

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
