Marc Bolan’s legacy is stepping back into the spotlight with a new documentary that celebrates both his music and his refusal to conform to rock’s stringent ideas of masculinity.

Titled Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex, the Ethan Silverman-helmed film explores the life of the glam-rock icon, from his chart-topping hits to his playful subversion of gender norms.

In one archival interview featured in the doc, the T. Rex frontman is asked about his s**uality. Marc Bolan answered:

“I’ve experienced many things in my life. I think, you know, as a child, my mother always told me that, um, if you love someone in any sphere, you know, love them all the time."

He went on:

“I love many men and many women, but I happen to like t***ies. So I tend to s**ually go more towards women. But I’ve checked everything out.”

When pressed on whether his openness was just for image, Marc Bolan quipped:

“David Bowie and I were going to get married at one time.”

Marc Bolan, born Mark Feld in 1947, died in a car accident in 1977 at just 29 years old. He was the driving force behind T. Rex (formerly Tyrannosaurus Rex), with hits like Hot Love, Bang a Gong (Get It On), Telegram Sam, and Metal Guru.

David Bowie recalls "extraordinary relationship" with Marc Bolan in new documentary

The documentary also delves into Marc Bolan’s relationship with fellow glam-rock pioneer David Bowie, who calls him a “very very good friend” in an archival clip.

David Bowie recalls in the film:

“Mark and I had an extraordinary relationship. We both knew we were going to do great things, and we were very close in the beginning, and then as it got closer to us actually making it, we drifted apart, and we’d be very wary of each other.”

The Space Oddity hitmaker added:

"He started getting fairly known, and invited me to do mime performances on his tours and stuff like that. But we kind of drifted, you know, we were at either end of the room by that time, you know, even being sort of superficially pleasant with each other. It was like, who's gonna do it first?"

David Bowie would continue to become a gigantic force in Rock & Roll until his passing in January 2016. He remains one of the most celebrated artists of all time.

Meanwhile, Angelheaded Hipster also features rare footage and interviews with tributes from Elton John, Ringo Starr, and Bowie himself, offering a deep portrait of a musician who refused to be boxed in, on and off stage.

The documentary is now in select theaters and will stream on demand beginning September 5, 2025.
