Selena Gomez recently opened up about her mental health struggles and love life in an appearance on the Therapuss podcast. The pop star led the discussion for mental health advocacy by providing information regarding her own challenges. She also described the way her and Blanco's professional relationship developed into a supportive one whilst in the company of host Jake Shane.
The mental health problems of Selena Gomez have been widely covered over the past couple of years. She has had depression and anxiety problems, and in 2020 was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She opened up about the experiences in the podcast, in which she said:
"I tried to share my story in hopes that it would be something to help others, and I think I did that when I admitted that I had struggled through my bipolar diagnosis. So that was more of a release for me. And then I realized anything that I touch or anything I’m a part of, it has to give back and some sort of element."
She then went on to reaffirm her faith in therapy by saying:
"And that just always has been my key demographic – it’s people who don’t feel seen or heard or, even know what’s going on and in their own mind. I just believe in therapy. I’m on medication and I feel really lucky that I’m in the position that I’m in now and I believe in all of that."
Selan Gomez's advocacy work has expanded beyond sharing her personal story. In 2020, she launched Rare Beauty with a commitment to mental health support, establishing the Rare Impact Fund to raise $100 million over ten years to increase access to mental health services.
Selena Gomez on Benny Blanco
In recent times, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's relationship has also been one that has grabbed the eyeballs. Their professional relationship began with their 2019 collaboration “I Can’t Get Enough, but it wasn't until years later that the two actually started dating.
Despite the fact that the chemistry between Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco was evident to some fans even in the first instance, news regarding the fact that the two were dating appeared only in December of 2023. The pop star also discussed Blanco in the podcast and provided information on how they developed their relationship into a deeper one.
"I feel like he was an acquaintance, if that makes sense. To be honest [we weren’t] besties, I just thought he was nice and then we did a few songs together. [After working together on Single Soon] we spoke for two hours and I asked him to hook me up with anybody that he knew that was cute and he was like, ‘Oh we do these things, these dinner nights. You should come. And next thing you know we’re dating. But he was terrified in the beginning cause he was like, ‘It’s work and it’s complicated and people are going to get mad,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t give a s–t; kiss me."
Blanco and Selena Gomez got engaged last year and have since announced plans to get married. In a collaborative effort, the couple also released another album titled "Said I Love You First" in March, and it has been received well by fans. As their relationship continues to gather steam, Gomez also shared her excitement for the wedding plans.
"I couldn’t be more excited. There’s so much happening at the moment with [Blanco] working on some projects that he has to wrap up and we just have things we want to finish and our own personal endeavors before we get into all the nitty gritty. I just have really never felt so sure about something and I also don’t want to jinx it by saying that."
Music has assumed a very important role throughout Selena Gomez's career in mental health struggles, in that it acts not only as an emotional release but also provides her a way to relate to other people. The connection between her music career and her relationship with Blanco adds another dimension to this healing journey.
