Kelly Clarkson and recently deceased, Brandon Blackstock got married in October 2013. Their union produced two children: River Rose and Remington “Remmy” Alexander. In 2020, the A Moment Like This hitmaker filed for a divorce from her husband, which was finalized in 2022. Although the couple had separated, they co-parented their kids.

On several occasions, Kelly has commented on her co-parenting experience with her ex-husband and talent manager. Most recently, in a March episode of the Not Gonna Lie podcast hosted by Kylie Kelce, Kelly described her co-parenting dynamic with Brandon as ‘fun.’

“Just innately, you're like, 'He's allowed to be somewhere, but you're not.' Like, that is real interesting. There's a lot that I keep in because...co-parenting is fun. It's like, 'Oh, he couldn't come because this,' and I'm like, 'Okay, cool.' Do you think I just leave and just sit in the park all day?”

Another time on Khloe Kardashian’s Daytime Talk Show in 2021, Clarkson described the process as ‘tough.’

“It’s tough. … I know with me and Brandon, it’s just a difficult thing because we’re in different places, and it’s like, we both agree on the main things, but it’s a hard thing when you’re not together all the time, for me personally."

More details on Kelly Clarkson’s relationship with Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, and former talent manager, Brandon Blackstock passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, after a battle with cancer. According to a statement from his representatives, Blackstock was surrounded by family when he passed peacefully.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family."

Brandon passed away a day after Kelly Clarkson postponed her Las Vegas shows to be with the father of her children.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill, and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding,” Kellly Clarkson wrote on Instagram.

The singer has spoken about her relationship with Brandon after their divorce. In an interview with People magazine, she explained that even if people love each other, they might not be right for one another.

“I’ve known love is not forever, and I don’t mean that to sound depressing, but I also think there’s a lot of pressure we put on that word. And sometimes, love is looking at someone and going, 'This is not good. This is not good for you. This is not good for me.”

Even after their divorce, Kelly Clarkson and Brandon were always there for their kids and held a place for each other in their hearts.
