Why did Rebecca choose to save Juno in Butterfly Season 1?

Before diving into Rebecca’s decision to save Juno from her father, we need to understand her relationship with Juno. Rebecca’s father left her and went into hiding after forming Caddis with Juno. He had to fake his own death for this. After disappearing, he married and even had a child.

While Rebecca, on the other hand, was left alone. She was left to fend for herself. For nine years, while David was gone, Juno weaponized Rebecca and used her for her own good. She used Rebecca’s emotions against herself. This undoubtedly makes her a villainous character.

However, there is more to it. Though Rebecca was used by Juno for all these nine years. She also cared for her. She loved Rebecca like her own daughter. In the series, Juno’s own son, Oliver, felt that his mother prioritised Rebecca over him. This became a significant reason behind Rebecca’s choice to save Juno in the end.

So at the end of Butterfly, when David almost had Juno and could have easily killed her, Rebecca stopped him. Rebecca’s words in episode 6,

“She’s a part of me, Dad, I know it doesn’t make any sense. But she’s a part of me. I want her to live.”

Her emotions and connections towards Juno resonate with the viewers. Juno is a part of her past. A part that evolved while her father was not by her side.

In an interview with The Direct, Piper Perabo speaks about Juno’s bond with Rebecca,

“I think Juno holds Rebecca very close. And it's different with Oliver, because he's biologically my son, but she's my star athlete, and so I kind of love them both, maybe not in the best way you can raise a kid. They're both, like, deeply, deeply important to me.”

Rebecca's saving Juno depicted her morality in a nuanced manner. Her choice might have saved Juno, but it also put David and herself in even more danger. This can be seen at the very end of the series.
