Kim’s character, David, gives us numerous moments that showcase his range as an actor with emotional scenes as well as high-octane action sequences.
More on this in our story.
Butterfly: Daniel Dae Kim plays David Jung in the Prime Video thriller
Daniel Dae Kim is the star of the thriller show Butterfly, with Reina Hardesty, who plays his daughter, Rebecca. As depicted in the show, David had faked his death nine years ago to protect Rebecca. However, after nine years, Rebecca finds herself working with her father’s former colleague, Juno, and has become a professional assassin.
This prompts Kim’s character, David, to return and save his daughter from a life that he has been living. Set in South Korea, David follows his daughter to convince her not to work for Juno.
There are numerous emotional father-daughter moments in the show. However, that does not mean we do not get to see Daniel Dae Kim in action, as, in order to protect his daughter, he had to get on the field and be involved in sleek action sequences, which will keep you hooked to the six-part series.
He tries to talk to his irate daughter about his disappearance in Episode 2 of Butterfly, which initially seems to satisfy Rebecca, but learning more about her father having a wife and another daughter brings the duo to square one. Other than uniting his family, David’s difficulties increase as Juno sends a hitman named Gun to kill David.
While trying to deal with Juno’s attempt at killing David, the family still has their moments of bonding, which include Rebecca. Whether it’s fighting one-on-one with a hitman or trying to bond with his estranged daughter and convince her to change her path of being an assassin, Daniel Dae Kim’s David shines in every scene in Butterfly.
Butterfly: Daniel Dae Kim’s comments about his character in the thriller series
While Butterfly is a thriller, the heart of the series is still the father-daughter narrative, where a father attempts to protect his daughter while the daughter is dealing with being abandoned by her parent.
Kim talked about this in his new interview with Fresh Air and shared:
"At its heart, it's actually a family relationship drama. And as a dad, I can tell you that a lot of the scenes between David, my character, and Rebecca resonated with me because I've made mistakes as a father and I've done so with the best of intentions, but the trauma that we can leave on our children and the trauma that is left on us as kids is sometimes something we really have to work hard to get through."
Butterfly has everything that makes a show superhit, from a relatable story about parent-child relationship issues, shocking twists, to action sequences that would keep the viewers glued to the screen.
