Harcourt and Adebayo's character development in Peacemaker Season 2
As Peacemaker Season 2 prepares to air on HBO Max on August 21, viewers can expect emotional depth, growing character journeys, and more stakes than ever before. Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo) and Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt) recently spoke with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con about their characters' current situation and what lies next.
Although there may be challenges, Danielle Brooks observed that Adebayo comes into Season 2 with a greater sense of confidence and belonging. Uncertain about her role, she was thrown into the chaos of a black-ops group full of seasoned operatives and erratic missions at the start of Season 1.
Adebayo's mother, Amanda Waller, cautioned her against her reliance on her emotional sense and constant self-doubt, despite her talent in spycraft. Brooks said:
“Well, when we first meet Adebayo, she really is kind of all over the place. She's trying to figure out her place in this 11th Street Kids. She's flustered half the time, really just all over the place. Then, through the conversations that she has with the other characters, and building that relationship, she gains her confidence.”
That growth led her to make one of the season’s boldest choices: exposing her mother’s illegal operations to the public. Now, in Peacemaker Season 2, Brooks says Adebayo is “more comfortable” in her skin. She shared:
“What I do see in her is that she's more comfortable in the group. This is her family now. This is her tribe, and so she wants the best for every last one of them. So, I feel like that's what's giving this season for her. The heart."
Brooks explained that Adebayo would be seen holding onto her optimism even as things grew darker, noting that she now feels more secure within the team, which she considers her family. She hinted, however, that James Gunn’s writing could take her character in unexpected directions.
Holland shared that Harcourt, who was a confident and composed field agent in Season 1, has become more hardened and emotionally guarded following the events of the finale.
After nearly dying and losing her job due to Adebayo’s public exposure of Amanda Waller’s secret task force, Harcourt will be entering Peacemaker Season 2 more closed-off. Holland added that she physically trained to reflect her character’s tougher appearance and mindset, aiming to show that Harcourt had grown stronger in both body and spirit.
Harcourt said:
“I was very fit in Season 1, but I wanted to look like I went through rehab after almost dying and really just got really strong so that she could never be taken advantage of again. I wanted her to really, truly look like she was strong enough to beat up a lot of large men, and so I really worked on building muscle mass, which is something I've never done in my life. I wanted to look bigger. So, that was a really interesting challenge. Making sure that she physically looked like she could do the things that she does was really fun for me.”
With Peacemaker Season 2 teasing a multiversal storyline and more emotional weight, fans can expect a mix of action, heart, and unpredictable turns.
