In May 2024, following the huge success of Shogun and its record-breaking wins at the Emmys, FX and Hulu confirmed that they are preparing for 2 more seasons of the show. They will be returning to compete for drama categories in the Emmys instead of limited series categories. The development for the upcoming seasons has started. The creators of the show, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and actor and producer of the show Hiroyuki Sanada are involved in the development.


In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rachel Kondo said that they are figuring out what to do with their characters in the upcoming seasons. Justin Marks revealed that Season 2 will be darker than Season 1. In the second season, Hiroyuki Sanada is the only cast member confirmed so far. According to Deadline, he signed a deal to return for the 2nd season and reprise his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
