ABC's Will Trent Season 3 finale concluded on an emotional cliffhanger for Ramón Rodríguez's Will and other characters of the show, after two of their detectives were left battling for their lives in Episode 18 Listening to a Heartbeat.
The intense two-part finale saw a bioweapons attack on Atlanta, orchestrated by a domestic terrorist group called Founder’s Front. As the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Atlanta Police Department raced to save the city, Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) was taken hostage by the group.
While Will and his team managed to save the day in the end, Amanda was shot by one of the terrorists, leaving her in a comatose state in the Season 3 finale. With Amanda being in a critical state, it is unclear if Sonja Sohn is leaving Will Trent, which will return with Season 4 in early 2026.
However, fans are positive that Amanda will recover and return, and the executive producer's comments certainly seem to indicate that Amanda will soon make a recovery.
Here are the possibilities explored for Sonja Sohn's future in Will Trent.
Is Sonja Sohn leaving Will Trent?
The Will Trent Season 3 finale was an intense and action-packed episode, which left at least two of its main cast's futures hanging in the air. While Detective Michael Ormewood was last seen having a seizure on his kitchen floor, a side-effect of his brain tumour, Amanda's life was literally hanging in the balance in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
After the terrorists took Amanda hostage in her own office, the events that led to her eventual fate were already put in motion. To make matters worse, Will was forced to leave with Caleb to locate where the bacteria were being aerosolized. Thankfully, Detective Angie, who was hiding in the bathroom, came up with a plan to attack the terrorists in Amanada's office.
While Angie's plan partly worked, she was unable to stop a bullet fired at Amanda, following which she was rushed to the hospital. While Amanda came out of surgery in the Will Trent Season 3 finale, she was still in a comatose state, and doctors warned that the next 48 hours were very critical for her.
Disappointingly, these 48 hours translate to a wait of six to seven months for fans, as ABC has confirmed that Season 4 will premiere in early 2026. While there has been no official announcement, it remains to be seen if Sonja Sohn is leaving Will Trent.
Will Sonja Sohn's character recover and return in Will Trent Season 4?
Sonja Sohn's character is central to both the show and Will's life, and it seems unlikely that the actress will leave the show in the future.
In the final moments of the Will Trent Season 3 finale, Will visits a critical Amanda in the hospital and expresses his unsaid feelings to her for the first time. While this was surely a pivotal moment for both characters, the circumstances were certainly a bummer.
Discussing this moment, executive producer Liz Heldens said in an interview with Variety:
''They’re (Will and Amanda) both so weird about feelings and a lot of stuff is left unsaid with them, which, as a writer, I really like. But it was the first time you see him really say what she means in his life and that he understands that she’s a stabilizing force for him, and there’s so much change happening in his life right now and he can’t lose her.''
She added:
''So it just seemed like a real, emotional cliffhanger — and hopefully, he can say those things to her when she gets better and she can hear him.''
Heldens' comments provide at least some hope for fans who want Sonja Sohn's character to return well in Season 4. The emotional ending to Season 3 will likely be resolved in the Season 4 premiere, and fans will finally learn the fate of two of their beloved characters.
