Here is what happened in season 1 episode 7 of The Institute
After Maureen’s video on the flash drive reveals the true horrors of the Institute, Ashworth initially seems ready to help Luke and Tim by connecting them with federal agents in Portland. But when they are about to leave, Drew turns on them, shooting Ashworth dead, and confirming Annie's suspicion. This incident highlights how deep Sigsby's influence runs in law enforcement.
With Ashworth gone, Drew holds them at gunpoint, forcing them to handcuff themselves while he reports back to Stackhouse. This marks the point of escalating tension as Sigsby herself is closing in. However, as mentioned, the two characters manage to escape.
When Stackhouse is on a phone call with Drew, he is interrupted by Hendricks and is instructed to push Avery to the limit in hopes of turning him into their golden precognition. Still cuffed, Luke manages to discreetly use his telekinesis to slide a safety pin across the table and into Tim’s hand. Tim then frees them both. Though they leave the station on time, they leave the flash drive behind, losing their most damning piece of evidence.
How did episode 7 of The Institute end?
When Drew finally brings Sigsby and her operatives into the station, they find nothing but Ashworth’s corpse and empty chairs. Sigsby is now furious, and she mobilises her team, ordering them to look for Luke and Tim before they go too far. This sequence becomes important because Luke begins to weaponise his telekinesis in clever, subtle ways, not just in bursts of emotion.
The incident also raises the stakes as the flash drive isn't with Luke, and they are both again in square one without it. The climactic standoff completes its circle when Luke and Tim get their breather with Wendy, and Drew and Sigsby catch up immediately.
Drew shoots Tim, giving him a wound. When Tim retaliates with force, Drew is killed, as confirmed by Wendy. This takes away one of the most loyal workers of Sigsby; she surrenders and clarifies the institution's notion without fighting.
This sets the foundation for the finale, with Tim, Luke, and Wendy having an upper hand over the Institution. The show is clearly positioning episode 8 to tackle whether the facility’s mission is a noble lie, a corrupt hustle, or a true-but-poisoned cause.
