The White Lotus has provided fans with a perfect mix of twists and turns throughout its three seasons on HBO. However, the Season 1 finale delivered one of the series' most shocking moments when resort manager Armond (played by Murray Bartlett) is killed under the most unexpected circumstances.
The White Lotus Season 1 is set at a luxurious resort in Hawaii, where a group of wealthy guests and eager staff try to manage their personal and professional problems. But at the start of the first episode, we find out that someone in the cast won't make it to the end, and the whole season keeps viewers guessing.
The murder mystery drama highlights the contrast between the working class and the wealthy, while also casting a mysterious murder shadow over everyone.
The White Lotus: Who dies in Season 1?
Over the six episodes of The White Lotus Season 1, we meet several interesting characters, including wealthy heiress Tanya McQuoid (played by Jennifer Coolidge), resort manager Armond, newlywed couple Shane (played by Jake Lacy) and Rachel (Alexandra Daddario), spa manager Belinda Lindsey (played by Natasha Rothwell), and the Mossbacher family with their daughter Olivia’s (played by Sydney Sweeney) friend Paula (played by Brittany O’Grady).
In The White Lotus Season 1, episode 6 titled Departures, there is an underlying tension from the moment the guests arrive at the picturesque resort. From friction within the Mossbacher family and Tanya betraying Belinda to Rachel’s staying stuck in her hopeless marriage to Shane, the season explored themes of redemption and tragedy.
However, the storyline that shocks the audience in Season 1 of The White Lotus is Armond's death. From the beginning of the series, Shane is shown having an argument with the manager, who has double-booked the Pineapple Suite.
Armond finds out about his employee’s pregnancy and surprise childbirth, which causes him to lose control. As he tries to handle the pressures of his job, he comes across Olivia and Paula’s backpack with drugs, leading him to abandon his self-control. He starts to lose it, and his downfall begins.
Add to it, Jake is determined to hold Armond responsible for derailing his honeymoon by placing them in the less desirable suite. Even though Armond makes efforts to cover up the mistake, Shane doesn't let it go, making things even harder for the manager. Armond’s mental health suffers as the drugs make him more irresponsible.
Armond knew his time at The White Lotus was running out since Shane had made sure to escalate the issue. The manager becomes angry when he finds out about his possible fate and decides to get revenge by breaking into Shane’s suit and shitting on his luggage. But his sneaky plan is foiled when Shane walks in and finds someone in his room.
As Armond tries to avoid being caught, he accidentally walks right into Shane, who was holding a knife for self-defense. Armond is stabbed and falls into the bathtub, dying. However, the series ends with Shane walking away free for accidentally killing Armond, giving it a perfect ending and highlighting how the wealthy can get away with anything.
