Surprises are the one thing Wednesday Addams detests more than joy and pep rallies.
Yet, in season 2, she gets thrown a coffin-sized one in her direction with the return of Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie), the ex-principal of Nevermore!
Fans are coming up with conspiracy theories because of her spectral reappearance as Wednesday's new spirit guide, at least because series lore suggested that guides would need to be blood relatives. Is Netflix preparing to reveal a juicy family secret, or is Larissa just a plot device?
Season 2 Part 1 left Wednesday exhausted; Goody's spellbook in ruins, her psychic abilities short-circuited due to overuse, and her faith in Morticia was as low as a bat's flight path. Larissa returns to the fold, floating in.
On the other hand, Morticia's words from Season 1 echo on: a psychic's guidance stems from their lineage. If so, Weems' return could point to a secret Addams or Frump connection instead of simply being a plot twist.
Could Larissa Weems be a Frump?
In Season 1, the relationship between Morticia and Weems was already icy at best. A glowing Morticia had no idea about her former roommate's brewing resentment. But Weems never fully buried her anger over Gomez picking Morticia over her, tore up yearbook pictures, and made cruel remarks. Viewed through a family lens, this complicated bond feels far more understandable.
Larissa's closeness to Morticia and her tireless rivalry could be explained if she were a distant cousin of the Frump family.
The Addams family is known for its family drama: Morticia fights with her mother, and her sister Ophelia's madness serves as a warning. Larissa's jealousy would then be more than just standard politics; it would be a different heartbreaking branch of the Addams-Frump family tree.
Wednesday’s (new) least favorite family member?
Wednesday might be forced to face an awful reality: a strange family reunion that she chose not to take part in. She disapproved of Weems when she was alive, even though she had always loved her kookier relatives (Uncle Fester, Grandmama Frump).
As a spectral guide, Weems can now unexpectedly visit Wednesday and nag her with ideas, warnings, and maybe even unresolved issues. Imagine being followed around at all times by your principal and your potential cousin. Even for Wednesday, this is pure nightmare fuel!
Larissa may be the only one who can help Wednesday regain her abilities since Goody Addams' spellbook is gone, and Morticia's guidance is not what her daughter wants. The girl who detests family the most might find herself in need of a connection she hadn't planned on - a classic example of gothic irony!
Weems vs. Principal Dort
Taking into account Weems' posthumous mission, this theory is all the more believable. Principal Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi) has taken control of Nevermore, directing Bianca Barclay and becoming close to the Frump family.
In real life, Weems stood up for Nevermore's outcasts, even if it meant breaking the law and hiding dead bodies. So it only makes sense that she would inevitably come back to life so as to avoid Dort's corruption.
The worst part is that Morticia and Hester Frump are already caught up in Dort's schemes. Weems may be bound to use Wednesday as a guide because of her loyalty to her family if she is, in fact, a Frump relative. It could be possible for her to safeguard her bloodline and Nevermore at the same time.
For fans, what could be more satisfying than finding that your bitter, cold school principal is (surprise!) your least favorite aunt?
Season 2, Part 2 will drop on Netflix on September 3!
