With its premiere, Outlander: Blood of My Blood has added a new dimension to the romantic drama franchise’s lore. The show follows two couples, who are Jamie and Claire’s parents.
Claire’s parents remained absent in Outlander, which made the audience wonder where they were. It was then established that her mother and father, Julia and Henry Beauchamp, died in a car crash in the early 1920s.
Claire was raised by her uncle and never had her biological family around her. However, Blood of My Blood has added a new twist to this story. As per the prequel series, Julie and Henry did not die in the said car crash. Instead, they time-traveled to the 18th century.
Claire's parents died as per Outlander, but Blood of My Blood changed their fate
For seven seasons, Outlander maintained that Claire Fraser’s parents died in a car crash in 1923, and she was then raised by her Uncle Lamb. However, as per Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Claire did not know what actually transpired with her parents.
The two did not die, and instead went through the same magical stones in Scotland that their daughter would use many years later. Hence, they traveled back in time and reached Scotland of 1714.
Julia and Henry’s real fate is revealed in the premiere episode of Blood of My Blood, when they are on a trip to the Scottish Highlands. While driving, the two talk about how Julia is pregnant and they are going to have another child after Claire. This plot point was never explored in the original series, as the story never mentioned Claire’s sibling.
Julia and Henry plan to tell Claire about their pregnancy when they get back from the trip. Before they can, their car crashes and is swept away by a river. People find the wrecked car but no bodies, so they think Henry and Julia died.
Meanwhile, the couple is pulled through the standing stones at Craigh Na Dun and ends up in the year 1714, almost 30 years before Claire’s own time travel. They are then separated right away as Julia is forced to work as a maid at Castle Leathers for Lord Lovat, and Henry is taken in by the Grants, a rival clan.
In the main series, Claire believes her parents died in her childhood. Now we know her mother was trying to return to her and that Claire might have a brother or sister who was born in the 18th century. This also brings up questions like why did no one in the past recognize Claire when she arrived years later, and why did Uncle Lamb not tell her that her parents’ accident did not confirm their deaths?
As Blood of My Blood releases more episodes, these questions might be answered, as the show explores their lives in the 1700s. Meanwhile, Claire’s story will conclude in the upcoming eighth and final season of Outlander.
