ABC’s What Happening!! It was both entertaining and groundbreaking. It impressed viewers with its storyline, which focused on the lives of African-American teenagers, a first in the late 1970s.
Set in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts, What’s Happening!! depicts the trials and tribulations of the lives of three teenagers: Roger, Freddy, and Dwayne. In addition to them, numerous actors in the ensemble cast made the show even greater.

1) Ernest Thomas as Roger ‘Raj’ Thomas
Ernest Thomas’s Raj lived with his divorced mother, Mabel, and sister in Watts, LA. He is described as a character who often finds himself in trouble. Other than What’s Happening!!, the American actor has also been seen in Everybody Hates Chris, Veep, and films like Malcolm X, among others.
2) Fred Berry as Freddy ‘Rerun’ Stubbs
Fred Berry plays Raj's friend, Freddy, in What’s Happening!! and hangs out with Raj and Dwayne in the soda shop together. Freddy is among the scene-stealing characters who will surely make you laugh with his humor in the sitcom.
The late actor appeared in several popular shows, including Scrubs, Alice, and the sequel to What’s Happening!! titled, What’s Happening Now!!.
3) Haywood Nelson as Dwayne Nelson
Nelson’s Dwayne is the third friend in the group in What’s Happening!!. He was the youngest member of the group and was friendly to a fault.
Nelson also appeared in the sequel to the show, among other TV shows such as Grady and The Parkers.
4) Danielle Spencer as Deadra Thomas
Danielle Spencer, who was a child actress at the time, played the troublemaking younger sister of Raj and is called Dee by her acquaintances in What’s Happening!!. While her brother often found himself in trouble, Dee wasn’t the one who would have let it pass, and he became the victim of her sarcastic comments.
The veteran actress recently passed away after battling stomach cancer. Other than What’s Happening!!, Spencer has also appeared in shows such as the popular soap opera, Days of Our Lives, The Brady Bunch Hour, and the sequel to What’s Happening!!.
5) Shirley Hemphill as Shirley Wilson
When we talk about witty characters, Hemphill’s Shirley Wilson tops the list. She works as a waitress in the soda shop where the boys hang out and does not shy away from showing her tough side.
The late actress and stand-up comedian also appeared in the sequel to the sitcom, One in a Million, and Good Times, among others.
6) Mabel King as Mabel Thomas
King plays Raj and Dee’s mother in What’s Happening!! and often appears to be authoritative when it comes to managing her troublesome children.
Over her long career, King appeared in numerous shows such as Fantasy Island, Tales from the Darkside, and Wiseguy, among others.
