Since every dysfunctional family needs an iconic pet, The Simpsons adopted a cute greyhound named Santa's Little Helper. The male dog made his first appearance in the first episode of the animated sitcom, a Christmas-themed episode titled Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.
Created by Matt Groening and Mimi Pond, Santa's little helper eventually became a recurring character in the sitcom and was also ranked 27th in Animal Planet's 2003 television special 50 Greatest TV Animals. The Simpsons' greyhound is now an iconic TV pet, also appearing in many merchandise inspired by the sitcom.
Initially voiced by Frank Welker (1991-1995), Santa's little helper is currently voiced by Dan Castellaneta and has also fathered many children in the sitcom. While many animals (featured in cartoons) behave with "semi-human awareness", the greyhound was written exactly the way animals behave in real life. Santa's little helper also shares many similarities with his owner, Homer, and has the same emotional range as him.

Santa's little helper: All About the Greyhound in The Simpsons
Santa's little helper is the fictional greyhound adopted by the titular family in the sitcom. While the dog was introduced in the show's first episode, it was originally the eighth produced episode, which is why Santa's little helper did not appear in the subsequent seven episodes after his introduction. However, the dog was later featured in many episodes.
Discussing how the greyhound became a recurring character on The Simpsons, creator Matt Groening told TV Guide:
"We [the staff] painted ourselves into a corner with our Christmas episode. Once we wrote the dog into the show, we were stuck with him."
Thanks to his frequent appearances on the show, Santa's little helper became a recurring character and an iconic pop culture pet, and has since been featured in many video games and comics centred on the show. In the initial episodes of the sitcom, the greyhound can be seen chewing on things and destroying many valuable items in the Simpson household. This forced Lisa and Bart to admit Santa's little helper to an obedience school, which featured an emotional storyline and strengthened the bond between the dog and the family.
How was Santa’s little helper introduced in The Simpsons?
Santa’s little helper makes his first appearance in the first episode of The Simpsons, titled Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire. This Christmas special episode featured Homer visiting a dog race track with Bart on Christmas Eve, after realising that he has no money to buy Christmas presents. While Homer had insider information on which greyhound was likely to win the competition, he still placed his bet on a last-minute entry, Santa's Little Helper, believing him to be a Christmas omen.
Discussing the importance of the greyhound's name in The Simpsons, writer Al Jean revealed to TV Guide:
"We needed a name that would inspire Homer to bet on him, an omen, a Christmas name since he was betting on Christmas Eve. But, at that point, nobody was thinking long-term. We weren't considering what might happen in ten years, when we've got to use this name."
The Greyhound finished last in the game, following which he was abandoned by his owner on the race track. Bart convinced Homer to adopt the dog, and The Simpsons welcomed him, believing him to be their Christmas present. Since then, Santa's little helper became the titular family's adopted pet.
He has also littered many children throughout the show, with a female hound named She's the Fastest in Season 6 and with Dr. Hibbert's poodle, Rosa Barks, in Season 15.
