Actor Timothy Olyphant and broadcaster Anderson Cooper seem to share a common lineage. On August 12, The Hollywood Reporter published an interview piece with Olyphant, where the interviewer brought up a Wikipedia claim that he shares a lineage with the historic Vanderbilt family.

He also asked if the actor had met Anderson Cooper, who is the son of artist and writer Gloria Vanderbilt. Timothy Olyphant’s light-hearted response was:

“You’re goddamn right I am, and somebody owes me money. It’s on my to-do list to head to upstate New York and see if I can get the keys to the house. I’ve never met Anderson.”

He continued:

“I assume that’s just because I keep missing the family reunions due to work and the kids. But now that I’m an empty-nester, I hope we’ll be having drinks soon.”

Anderson Cooper is connected to the Vanderbilt family through his mother.

According to Entertainment Weekly, reports circulating online claim that Timothy Olyphant’s fourth great-grandfather was Cornelius Vanderbilt. His lineage is seemingly from his father, John Vernon Bevan Olyphant’s side. Online reports mention that John’s grandmother is Emily Vanderbilt Sloane.

In 2021, Anderson Cooper published a book, Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty, which he co-wrote with Katherine Howe. Speaking of the book with People Magazine in September 2021, he stated:

“As a kid, my mom didn't really talk about her childhood. It was very painful for her. So I grew up not really knowing much about the Vanderbilts, and the little I did know was that they were very wealthy and they had built enormous palaces, and some of those were museums, but a lot of them had disappeared.”

Timothy Olyphant looks back on Fast & Furious

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Timothy Olyphant was asked how he took care of work he didn’t like. He said he had been fired more than once. At least one time, he had wanted to quit, but stayed because he still wanted to get paid.

Olyphant jokingly mentioned that maybe a nicer way to put it was that he was “replaced” and mentioned he had shared those stories before, but didn’t feel like talking about them again. The interviewer noted that the actor rejected a role offered in Fast & Furious. When asked how he now looked at the success of the film, Timothy Olyphant said:

“The pitfall here is that it’s very hard to answer that question without feeling like I’m offending somebody. So, if I start saying, “No, it’s never occurred to me,” or “No, I’ve never seen those movies,” it just starts to sound like … ugh, let’s say I didn’t ever say that. I love those movies. I’m thrilled that they worked for everybody involved.”

When asked if he worried about returning to old roles, Timothy Olyphant said all his experiences of doing that had been very enjoyable. He encouraged it and didn’t see a problem with remakes or reboots.

Olyphant compared it to Broadway, where people watch the same plays every few years, and felt it was silly to say Hollywood had no new ideas just because they brought back old ones.
