Thomas Stanley Holland was born in Kingston upon Thames, in southwest London, to comedian and author Dominic Holland and photographer Nicola (née Frost). He has three younger brothers. His paternal grandfather was from the Isle of Man, while his paternal grandmother was from County Tipperary, Ireland.

Holland had his education in Wimbledon, south-west London, at Donhead, an all-male Catholic preparatory school. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of seven. Holland enjoyed his new school, but the cost began to strain his family's resources. Holland first attended the voluntary-aided Jesuit comprehensive school Wimbledon College. He then went on to the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon.
Holland considered several professional options as a child. He loved Janet Jackson's songs as a kid and would frequently dance to them. The private school Holland was visiting at the time advertised a dancing class, which his mother registered him in.
