The Skrill, a medium-sized Strike Class dragon, made its debut in the Book of Dragons and was first described in How to Train Your Dragon.

A brief reference to the Skrill unfolds while Hiccup reads the Dragon Manual to learn about Night Furies. Though its name was only mentioned, it is described as "extremely dangerous" and the Dragon Manual advises readers to "kill on sight," just like most of the dragons.

The Skrill in How to Train Your Dragon

Listed in the Dragon Manual as one of the most mysterious and feared creatures, the Skrill is aggressive and extremely powerful, making it tough to train. According to Ryker, Skrills are extremely uncommon and have a reputation similar to that of the terrifying Night Fury because of their past use as weapons by the Berserkers. Similar to lightning strikes, this lone dragon is aggressive and unpredictable. It has a strong territorial nature despite its preference for stormy weather.

Skrills are known for their elusiveness and inherent mistrust of both humans and other dragon species. They seek out lightning storms and use these settings to protect themselves from any predators or to quickly replenish their limited projectile capacity. They are renowned for their aggressiveness, which frequently causes them to act rashly after being trapped under ice for an extended period.

Skrills also have a strong need for revenge and would stop at nothing to get even with people they believe have wronged them. They are competitors of Night Lights in the present era, according to Legends of the Nine Realms. Skrills have a particularly hostile approach against any Night Lights they come across, and they will attack them without warning. They frequently seek out and invade Night Lights' domains in the Hidden World, frequently just to engage in combat. Whether Trained Skrills and Night Lights get along is uncertain.

Gaining the trust of a Skrill requires you to demonstrate your willingness to put your life in danger to tame or train it. After Hiccup and Toothless locked him in a glacier, the Frozen Skrill held resentment toward them. When he first appeared, he was going to hurt the two in retaliation, but after Hiccup liberated the Skrill and protected him from the Dragon Hunters, the dragon finally let go of his animosity toward them, bowed, and took off into the sky.

However, unlike other dragons, the Skrill has been shown to favor freedom above training. When taught, the Skrill shows a great deal of commitment to its trainer and companions, and it is prepared to battle with them even if it means dying.
